Bald is beautiful, breast cancer is not

Breast cancer is a beast that stalks my family.  My grandmother, aunt and dear cousin (more like a sister than cousin) were taken from our family in less than a 2 year period by breast cancer.  The women in my family get tested often.  The fear of breast cancer hangs over our heads like a black cloud.  They say it runs in families on the maternal side.  All three of those beautiful women were on my mom’s side.

When someone is diagnosed with breast cancer the bottom of their world seems to drop out.  Those of us who love them just sit there stunned at first not knowing what to do, but wanting to do something…anything.

This is my friend Abi:

Abi does NOT have breast cancer.

Abi lives in the UK.  I’ve known her for a quite a few years, we met on a mom’s board and became friends.  Abi is amazing.  For many things, but this one tops them all.  Abi has a friend named Dawn who was diagnosed with breast cancer.  Wanting to do something but feeling helpless, Abi came up with the idea to not let Dawn be bald on her own (due to chemo, etc).  So Abi spread the word that she was going to get sponsored to shave her lovely long red locks and give the money to Dawn to help pay for stuff that Dawn and her family would need.

Abi did what most people don’t do…she put her money where her mouth is.  She didn’t just say, “Oh I’m so sorry you’re sick.  Let me know what I can do.”  Abi actually DID something.  Even more amazing is the long hair that came off went to a little girl who’d lost her hair so that she could have a wig in a gorgeous shade of red.

I thought Abi was beautiful before…it doesn’t hold a candle to how gorgeous she is now.  Way to go Abi!  More people need to have a heart like yours!

ps (yes I’ve already asked Abi if I could put this up…she graciously agreed to it so that we can hopefully raise some more money for Dawn and her family)

PSS, I’m leaving this up as main post as I want it to get the attention it deserves.  Hoping people will see what Abi did and feel the need to help Dawn out.  Lots of crafting coming in the new week.
